The ongoing transfer window could be one for the ages. While top-flight teams are bound to spend the big summer bucks, lower-division clubs seldom shy away from flexing their muscles. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s Wrexham have cosmic plans for the window as their team returns to League One after a two-decade wait. Head coach Phil Parkinson has already outlined his top targets. However, things won’t be easy as the Welsh club could face serious competition with other top lower-division teams.

According to The Rob Ryan Red Podcast, Wrexham is keen on securing the services of Wigan Athletic’s Jason Kerr. The Scotsman has been a cornerstone in Wigan’s defense and is known for his no-nonsense defending as a center-back. Kerr will enter the final year of his contract with Wigan in July and will be available for $765,000. However, his parent club wouldn’t want to lose him and will look to negotiate a new contract rather than sell him this summer, especially to a league rival.

Notably, Wrexham aren’t the only admirers of Jason Kerr, with some top Scottish teams also eager to ink a deal. If Kerr does not extend with Wigan in the coming weeks, the team could see him to the highest bidder. This could be a big blow for the Hollywood-esque club, as they desperately need a top defender.

Jason Kerr isn’t the only Wigan name they’ve shown an interest in. Multiple reports say that Wrexham is in constant touch with three released Wigan stars. Stephen Humphrys, Josh Magennis, and Tom Pearce are reportedly on Phil Parkinson’s radar. They were released after they embarrassingly finished in the bottom three of the Championship, dropping to League One.

Phil Parkinson is also said to be a keen admirer of Tom Pearce. The 26-year-old is seen as a direct replacement for the ever-loved Ben Tozer. Wrexham parted ways with the veteran duo of Ben Tozer and Jordan Tunnicliffe, alongside six other players before the summer transfer window. Both of them were on high wages. And the front office felt the money could be used for further building.

If Wrexham cannot get their hands on Jason Kerr, Tom Pearce could be an apt replacement. The 26-year-old who also has experience in Everton, Leeds, and Scunthorpe’s colors has shown great potential over the years to be a perfect fit for any employer.
