In 52 outings last campaign, Wrexham conceded just 46 goals. There is no doubt that the solid defensive foundation played a key role in the Red Dragons’ promotion. But, the very same defensive foundation has been shook to its core. Next season, the Welsh side will be without the centre-back trio of Ben Tozer, Jordan Tunnicliffe, and Aaron Hayden. Hence, a new defender is imperative for Ryan Reynold’s side. Therefore, the news regarding transfer target Marvin Ekpiteta would have attracted considerable attention at STōK Cae Ras.

Marvin Ekpiteta’s 4-year stint at Blackpool is about to come to an end as his contract won’t be renewed. Reports last week suggested that Wrexham were interested in snapping up the free agent. From the Red Dragons’ point of view, the signing ticked all the boxes. Standing at 6.4, Ekpiteta is a physical specimen that would greatly strengthen the side’s backline. Having scored 12 goals in 143 games for Blackpool, Ekpiteta is also handy on the other end of the pitch. At, 28-year-old, the Englishman has all it takes to be Wrexham’s defensive lynchpin. But, does a move appeal to him?

For starters, Ekpiteta prefers a move to the Championship. He has previously said, “Joining a Championship club is my aim. Football is a short career so I want to play as high as possible.” But, with Wrexham’s current trajectory, a 3rd consecutive promotion doesn’t look out of reach. Perhaps, this could influence Ekpiteta’s move.

Moreover, he also has a great chance of being in the starting XI for the Welsh side. If the signing gets over the line, it will pretty much end Wrexham’s center-back issues. But that’s the lesser of their defensive worries.

Last season, Arsenal loanee Arthur Okonkwo lined up between the sticks for the Red Dragons. His form was impressive and he made it to League Two TOTY. However, he has since gone back to Arsenal. While manager Phil Parkinson assured that Wrexham will ‘give it everything‘ to bring the Englishman back, nothing has been agreed till now.

Adding salt to the wound, the club released 3rd choice Rob Lainton recently. He was one of the 8 players released by the club shortly before the Las Vegas trip. Having played a total of 0 games last season, the upper management’s decision is understandable. But, the decision might not look smart if the club isn’t able to bring in a suitable replacement.

As it stands Wrexham will be heading into the season with Mark Howard as the #1. Howard has plenty of experience but it is telling that Okonkwo was preferred pretty much for the entirety of the last campaign.
