Wrexham’s plans for the ongoing transfer window have already been laid bare. As manager Phil Parkinson said recently, “The aim has always been to improve what we have got in each transfer window.” League One is undoubtedly a sterner test compared to League Two and hence incoming are the priority for the Red Dragons this season. While they have been linked to a whole host of names, including Jamie Vardy, nothing has materialized. The latest story from STōK Cae Ras is that the Welsh Club is keen on a defender who has impressed Phil Parkinson.

According to the RobRyanRed podcast, Wrexham is keen to sign Wigan Atletic defender Jason Kerr. The Scottish center-back will be arriving as a free agent and represents a real financial bargain for Ryan Reynolds’ side. At 27 years old, Kerr has the experience and maturity to lead the Wrexham backline. Although he is a favorite of Parkinson and the coaching staff, there are some hurdles to a potential transfer.

Firstly, Kerr is not short of options and has interest from the likes of Peterborough United and Scottish clubs. Secondly, he is a player who has recently suffered from a lot of injury issues. Since joining Wigan Atletic in 2021, the defender has made just appearances. It is not yet known whether the medical history will put off the Wrexham recruitment. But one thing is clear. Following the departures of defensive lynchpins like Ben Tozer, Jordan Tunnicliffe, and Callum McFadzean, the Red Dragons need a defensive reinforcement. And it seems, they already have alternative options lined up.

Wrexham keen on signing prominent League One defender

Marvin Ekpiteta has been one of the standout defenders in League One recently. Standing at 6.4 feet, Ekpiteta has the physicality to dominate the boxes and intimidate strikers. Moreover, he is also an impressive goal threat and has 12 goals in 143 matches for Blackpool. His leadership capacity and experience make him the ideal replacement for former captain Ben Tozer. His contract at Blackpool expires in June and he is soon set to be a free agent. Recent reports indicated that Wrexham is keen on bringing him to STōK Cae Ras. However, the move won’t be straightforward.

Ekpiteta has previously revealed his dream to compete in the Championship. The Englishman had said, “Joining a Championship club is my aim. Football is a short career so I want to play as high as possible.” Hence, it remains to be seen if continuing in League One with Wrexham would appeal to him. With the Red Dragons aiming for a 3rd consecutive promotion, Ekpiteta could soon find himself in the Championship even if he joins the Red Dragons.
