Is Ruben Amorim the next Sir Alex Ferguson, or just another overhyped managerial prospect?

Ruben Amorim is the name on every Manchester United fan’s lips. The Sporting CP boss is just days away from taking over from Erik ten Hag after the Premier League giants triggered his $10.8 million release clause. Ardent fans are well-acquainted with their soon-to-be managed, with many labeling him as the next Jose Mourinho. However, Amorim has his own take, suggesting he might just become the next Sir Alex Ferguson!

Before parting ways with Sporting CP, the 39-year-old tactician will manage the Lions for his final home game in the UEFA Champions League. The Liga Portugal side is hosting Manchester City at the José Alvalade Stadium for Matchday 4 of the league phase. Of course, the stakes are high for the game. Amorim faces his soon-to-be Premier League rivals before he even arrived in England.

Mind you, it’s not just Sporting fans who are rooting for a win against Pep Guardiola and Co., with many Red Devils supporters also backing Ruben and Co. to do more than just survive the wrath of the 2023-24 champions. However, if that happens, Amorim knows the consequences. Speaking in the presser ahead of the game, the Sporting boss said, “If the Man City result is negative, expectations will drop. If we win, they [Manchester United fans] will think that the new Alex Ferguson has arrived…”

Looks like Amorim himself is doing the job of pumping United supporters on how a potential win against the Sky Blues can increase their expectations of him. That way, the former Braga SC manager would be anticipated to dominate against the derby rivals.

Chances might be that Amorim becomes the new Sir Alex in the eyes of many; that’s because the City isn’t in the best of spirits. Guardiola and Co. have lost their last two games, both by a 2-1 score line. They fell to Bournemouth and then to Tottenham Hotspur, resulting in their EFL Cup elimination within the round of 16. In fact, for the first time in history, Man City is on the verge of enduring three consecutive defeats.
