Is Wrexham’s growth just an illusion? From battling closure in 2020 to becoming one of the favorite soccer clubs in the United States, the journey seems surreal. The club is now on the verge of qualifying for the English Football League (EFL) League One after almost two decades. Despite the humongous amount of thought put by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney for its resurrection, the club was severely undermined. In a recent revelation, the Peterborough United chairman’s wife felt that Wrexham had no scope for promotion.
Taking about Wrexham’s surreal progress, Darragh MacAnthony is not surprised with its progress, in contrast to his wife’s thoughts. “I said to my wife when this started that they’ll be in the Championship in four years’ time and she said, ‘never going to happen’,” he said, taking about his wife’s skepticism. However, the Irishman knew why they were heading for success immediately after the takeover by Hollywood stars.

Meanwhile, entering League Two only this season, Wrexham is currently 2nd on the table and knocking at the door of League One next season. Providing his analysis further, MacAnthony credited the thought process in managing the club. The Peterborough boss said their ability to innovate and strike deals with various brands has generated considerable revenue.
However, the main reason for his prediction was due to the influence of Reynolds and McElhenney’s ability to arrange funds for bringing talented players. Speaking further, MacAnthony said, “I said ‘trust me, they’ll be in the Championship and we’ll probably be in League One’ because they can pay £7,000, £8,000, £9,000, £10,000 a week to players and we can’t. That’s the dynamic of the game.” Nevertheless, the journey isn’t as smooth for the American-owned club as it looks.
