Does Luana Bertolucci's fight against cancer redefine what it means to be a true sports hero?

Trinity Rodman has been navigating her own struggles with injuries on the field. After being taken out in a wheelchair against Kansas City Current, she still remains sidelined. Yet, her challenges pale in comparison to those faced by Luana Bertolucci of Orlando Pride, who is bravely fighting cancer. And even Trinity Rodman couldn’t resist but get moved by her journey and take a moment to pen down an emotional message.

Earlier this year, Orlando Pride announced that Luana had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma—a type of cancer affecting the lymphatic system. Since then, she has fought valiantly and recently celebrated a significant achievement by ringing the bell.

For those unfamiliar with this tradition, patients often ring a ceremonial bell to mark the conclusion of their chemotherapy treatments. Bertolucci triumphantly rang hers after completing her final round of chemo—with several teammates from Orlando Pride joining her at the hospital for this special occasion.

Although Trinity Rodman is not a member of the Orlando Pride and plays for their NWSL opponent, the Washington Spirit, occasions like this have the power to unite everyone. On the other hand, as for the Washington Spirit forward herself, it appears that her injury issues are still not fully over, as indicated by her coach at Washington Spirit, Jonatan Giráldez.

Latest update on Trinity Rodman’s injury

Trinity Rodman’s recovery from her injury has been progressing gradually, but there are signs of improvement. Just a few weeks ago, her agent provided a worrying update, mentioning that she experienced an “intense back spasm.” Shortly thereafter, Jonatan Giráldez, stated that the results of her recent examination were positive; however, she was still experiencing back pain.

Have an interesting take?

Recently, Giráldez announced the encouraging news that the USWNT star is once again participating in team training. He noted, “She is training step by step.” Nonetheless, her participation in Washington Spirit’s upcoming match remains uncertain. Giraldez added, “I do not want to say anything for the next weekend because I don’t want to add any type of pressure.”

He believes Trinity Rodman hasn’t fully returned to 100%, and it’s evident he aims to safeguard his star player until the USWNT forward is completely ready with playoffs approaching quickly. Although it’s likely she won’t be available for the next game, this progress suggests she is on track to regain fitness and be ready for action when playoff time arrives.
