In a deeply saddening development, Panamanian soccer icon and former MLS player, Luis Tejada, tragically passed away. Known as an illustrious figure in Panama’s soccer trajectory, the former striker cemented his legacy with significant contributions, domestically and internationally. Beginning his journey into professional soccer in Panama City, the city of his birth, he made an impressive debut for Tauro FC in 2001. Throughout his dynamic career, he secured the honorary status of Panama’s highest-scoring player of all time by netting 43 goals.

Fondly known to fans as ‘El Matador’, Tejada was instrumental in securing Panama’s historic qualification for their maiden voyage to the FIFA World Cup in 2018. His prowess was not confined solely to domestic play; international accolades pepper his comprehensive resume. Commencing this global expedition in 2001 saw him experience an array of South American clubs over two remarkable decades.

His adventurous spirit led him beyond South America’s borders when he joined the MLS team, Real Salt Lake, during the 2006 season. However, the tenure ended prematurely with the release by coach Jason Kreis in the summer following year. This setback proved minor for a talent like Tejada, who swiftly returned to South America, forging ahead undeterred until completing a star-studded career and amassing an imposing tally of 184 club-level goals by its conclusion in 2022. Regrettably, this beacon that illuminated Panamanian soccer so vibrantly has met an untimely end.
