They kept him away from European soccer
When the world came to know about the heroics of the Brazilian star, he was already getting contacted by big European clubs. However, despite clubs like Juventus, Inter, Real Madrid, Manchester United, etc. being interested in signing the star he never played for any one of them.

According to various reports. It happened because of the bills passed by the Brazilian government. They designed the bills solely for Pele to join a European club. In the bill, it announced Pele as the national treasure.
The decision of then-president Janio Quadros came in a desperate time for the government as they were looking for something to catch the mind of voters as they decided to ban bikinis and gambling. This is the reason Pele had to play in the south American leagues.

The legendary soccer player played for 21 years. He had appeared in 700 club matches, scoring a staggering total of 655 goals. he had also played 92 games for the Brazil National team scoring 77 goals and winning them 3 world cups.
From 1956 to 1974 he played for Santos, appearing in 636 games and scoring 618 goals for his club. He then transferred to New York Cosmos, and spend the last two years of his career with them.
