Charlie Aitken’s passing at age 81 has caused grief among the soccer fandom. He made a record at Villa that won’t be broken anytime soon, with the most appearances for the Aston Villa with 660 games. To give an idea of how big his achievement is, the second player with the most appearances has played 531 matches. He has also netted 16 times for the Claret and Blue. Aitken was with the Villans when they were relegated to the 2nd and 3rd divisions, and then back again to the first division in 1967 and 1975. After spending more than 15 years at Aston Villa, he decided to switch teams and join the New York Cosmos in the MLS. In America, he was lucky enough to play alongside the soccer icon Pele.
It’s quite astonishing that Aitken made more league appearances than Al-Nassr superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney given that both made glorious impacts on the Premier League. Now, Aitken’s death has caused a massive upset among the fans. Aston Villa was the first to inform the news and show their respect for their icon on its social media.
