FC Barcelona boasts a storied and illustrious history. But throughout the years, the Spanish giants have lost their spark. Already going on with countless tribulations, another dark chapter made its way to Camp Nou. In a shocking turn of events, Joan Casals, known as the ‘Grandfather of Barca,’ has bid adieu to the world at the age of 90. As word of his passing spreads, soccer fans all over the world swarm to pay tribute to the man who not only has been a pillar of the Blaugrana fandom but also bears a resemblance to a cartoon character.
A lifelong supporter of Barcelona, Casals established himself as a familiar figure at many of the club’s events throughout the years. He was well-known for his courteous manner and amiable personality. Aside from fervently cheering at the stands while waiving the Barca flag in the air, he frequently attended supporters’ club gatherings. Interestingly, the reason why Casals got the nickname of the grandfather of Barcelona is that he had a striking resemblance to a character named l’Avi del Barça, or the Grandfather of Barça, created by cartoonist Valentí Castanys in 1924.

Until its end in 1936, this character not only featured in the magazine Chut! but also epitomized the essence of Barcelona. In fact, the year 1972 saw the Catalans honor the character of l’Avi del Barça by unveiling a sculpture in the gardens of their world-class academy, La Masia. Around 1984, fans recognized Casals as the real-life personification of the Grandfather of Barça. Later in 2007, the club formally gave Casals this designation as a way of honoring his services.
Although Casals has left this world, his legacy will endure and serve as a continued source of inspiration. Numerous heartfelt comments were shared in memory of his life and contributions.
