The past few days have been surprising at the Catalonian capital. Barcelona board stunned everyone as they announced Xavi‘s departure just weeks after literally begging him to stay! Even the manager was caught off guard by the board’s decision, with fans left dumbfounded at the sudden decision. With the dust settled and Xavi already out of the door, it’s reflection time for Barcelona after what has been a forgettable season at most.
Skipper Marc-Andre ter Stegen addressed the media following Xavi’s final game as Barcelona head coach. The German shot-stopper stood in defense of his manager, claiming his performances haven’t been up to the mark and he needs to improve.
Ter Stegen, when asked if he felt guilty for the manager’s sacking, stated, “Yeah, as a player you always have something to do with it if the coach or the club takes a decision. Talking about the coach, in this situation we all are the ones who fight for our objectives. We weren’t able to do it the way the club wanted to and then the club took the decision and we have to respect it.”

While Ter Stegen might have taken the high road, the German is the least of Barcelona’s problems. Despite conceding 37 goals this season, the German was the only goalkeeper in the Spanish top flight to maintain a clean sheet ratio over 50%*. (*Played for more than 20 games) Fans will hope the player can continue to perform well next season under Hansi Flick with the German set to take over Xavi’s role in the upcoming weeks.
