Cristiano Ronaldo and the UEFA Champions League were a match made in heaven. It’s no secret that even today, fans miss the presence of the Portuguese superstar in Europe’s biggest competition. Despite speculations of interest from Saudi Pro League clubs in participating in the UCL, the opportunity was ultimately rejected. However, hope for CR7’s return to the European scene reigns as Saudi clubs have reportedly raised the same question again.
The latest update comes from TNT’s Raoul Ortiz, who claims that Saudi clubs will seek permission to participate in the UCL. This move would entail Middle Eastern teams departing altogether from the AFC Champions League, where they typically have competed. Whether UEFA and its board will approve this request remains uncertain. Should it be granted, the Top 4 Saudi Arabian teams would likely join the tournament, following a qualification process similar to that of the Asian Champions League. But that’s not all!

Undoubtedly, the presence of Gulf-based clubs will add an intriguing dimension to the UEFA Champions League. Furthermore, Cristiano Ronaldo, who bid farewell to his beloved tournament upon joining Al Nassr at the end of 2022, will have the opportunity to reignite his relationship with the European Championship. The 39-year-old will also have the chance to solidify his title as ‘Mr. Champions League’, a recognition he earned by holding the records for most appearances (183), goals (140), and assists (42) in the competition. While it all sounds intriguing, the ball remains in UEFA’s court. However, there might be a possibility that this development will transpire in no time.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Saudi Pro League clubs joining the UEFA Champions League won’t ‘take too long’, claimed a high-profile individual
Newcastle United’s Co-owner, Amanda Staveley, is confident that UEFA will soon accept Saudi Arabia’s desire to participate in the Champions League. During the Bloomberg Power Players Summit in Jeddah, she stated, “I’m quite sure there will be a Saudi club in the Champions League. I don’t know how long (it will take) but, knowing Saudi, I don’t think it’ll take too long.”
It’s worth mentioning that the UEFA Champions League will use a ‘Swiss format’ beginning next season, extending the Group Stage to include 36 clubs instead of the current 32. Additionally, a Saudi Arabian journalist reported last month that Al Nassr might qualify for the revamped 2024–2025 UCL. However, with other Saudi clubs also pushing to play, let’s see what developments occur at this stage.
