Is an apology enough when a bad call costs a team like Wrexham their shot at glory?

Although Wrexham got their league campaign up and running, Sheffield United knocked out the Red Dragons in the Carabao Cup 1st round matchup. The Blades came back from a 1-0 deficit to win 4-2 at the end. But, the game had its fair share of controversies. Auston Trusty headed home the equalizer after rising from a corner to level things up. However, this goal should not have stood according to Wrexham boss, Phil Parkinson.

The Wrexham boss revealed how the referee came and apologized after not giving a foul for Sheffield United’s equalizing goal. Apparently, Parkinson spotted a block leading to the goal, which confused the manager. He believed there was a lot of pushing and pulling involved by the Sheffield United players.

He stated, “He did apologise to me at half-time, someone must have told him, but he needs help from the linesman and the fourth official because we all saw it.”

The manager kept reiterating how his side was well in the game and that goal changed the course of the match. After that incident, Lewis Brunt turned into his own net to give Sheffield United the lead. After that, Brewster missed a penalty from the spot only for Louie Marsh to get in the rebound. Ben Slimane added a fourth goal in the final minutes and Sebastian Revan got a consolation goal to make the score 4-2. Yet, the game’s turning point became the equalizing goal that got the Blades back.

Parkinson analyzed their equalizing goal and mentioned, “We got the first goal but their first goal should never have been allowed. How the referee hasn’t seen that block is beyond belief. It’s right in front of his eyes – he’s five yards away from it and it’s a blatant block.”

Their dreams of a glorious cup run had a premature ending. Yet, all is not lost. Wrexham took home a victory in the opening match in the Football League One.
