Eclipsing the sheer dominance of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi is no easy feat. The influence of these two undisputable legends has always kept them at the top. Yet, with the emergence of generational talents like Kylian Mbappe, fans should get accustomed to the prospect of both iconic players being dethroned. In a surprising turn of events, the Frenchman has overtaken Messi and Ronaldo in Europe’s trademark race.
As per the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and complied by Euronews Business, the PSG superstar possesses 7 EU trademarks, whereas Messi and Ronaldo each hold 6. This solidifies his position at the forefront of EU trademarks owned by soccer players worldwide. Interestingly, Mbappe’s trademarks encompass his distinctive cross-armed goal celebration, his name, and his company logo.
Additionally, the former Monaco player has secured trademarks for two of his renowned quotes—“Le football, il a changé” (Football has changed) and “Moi, tu m’parles pas d’ge” (You don’t talk to me about age)—for various products, including electronic games, mobile apps, posters, handbags, footwear, cosmetics, and jewelry.

Additionally, the EUIPO acknowledged that Mbappe submitted two more trademark applications in February. Notably, an EU trademark grants exclusive rights across all EU countries, encompassing a market of nearly 500 million consumers. It keeps players safe against counterfeiting and fraudulent activities. While it’s common for male players to register trademarks, female players remain absent from the European IP protection landscape.
A representative from the EUIPO disclosed that prominent figures such as Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmatí, Marta, Alex Morgan, and Caroline Graham have not yet ‘started to play the IP game.’ Interestingly, Mbappe’s forthcoming destination team also rules the list!

When it comes to trademark registration of clubs, the EU office acknowledged Real Madrid as the ‘King of Europe.’ The La Liga powerhouse possesses over 33 EU trademarks and 24 designs, including the distinctive shape of the benches’ seats at the Bernabeu stadium. In contrast, Madrid’s archrival, FC Barcelona holds 22 EU trademarks and 7 designs. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich, PSG, and Manchester United complete the Top 5 in Europe.
The sound bite “Ici c’est Paris (This is Paris),” which was directly recorded from supporters’ chants, is one of PSG’s trademarks. Similarly, many major European leagues own several EU trademarks and designs to protect their logos, names, and trophy designs. Furthermore, MLS also owns multiple EU trademarks outside of the 27-nation bloc. Indeed, it is quite a remarkable list.
