After the country’s highly successful hosting of the FIFA World Cup in 2022, Qatar is now turning its attention to the Olympics. The small Middle Eastern nation is certainly no stranger to large international sporting events. Having hosted the Asian Games in 2006 and the FIFA Club World Cup on three occasions. But the World Cup was on a different scale entirely, and Qatar is keen to build on that success.

Qatar has been making its intention to host the Olympics clear for a long time now. The country had hoped to host the 2016, 2020, and 2032 Olympics but was rejected all three times. Now, the Middle Eastern country is setting its sights on the 2036 edition of the Olympics and Paralympics games.

Qatar’s state after hosting FIFA World Cup 2022

Qatar is a small country with limited infrastructure, and hosting the Olympics would require a massive investment in infrastructure development. Given Qatar’s lack of necessary infrastructure and the $180 billion loss it incurred from hosting the FIFA World Cup, the Olympics seems like an ambitious goal.

Qatar spent more than $220 billion to host the FIFA World Cup. This included building stadiums, roads, hotels, and many other infrastructures to make it tourist and visitor friendly. All of this has put them in a $180 billion loss. It is tough to say how this middle Eastern nation will handle the situation. However, Qatar remains undeterred and is determined to prove the world wrong.

All these rejections and subsequent losses are not the only problems Qatar has to face. Another obstacle is the heat in the summer of this nation. The 2022 FIFA World Cup was pushed back to November/December to avoid the sweltering summer temperatures. But that might not be an option for the Olympics.

Qatar has been through a lot in the past few years, including a diplomatic crisis with its neighboring countries and allegations of corruption surrounding the World Cup. However, Qatar has persevered through all of this and is now focused on its next goal—hosting the Olympics. Only time will tell if Qatar will be successful in its bid to host the 2036 Olympics.
