Karim Benzema has not shown up for training recently and it seems Marcelo Gallardo is not impressed. As per Marca, He was due to report this Friday the 12th at Jeddah, which he failed to do. Unexpectedly, he was absent for 3 previous training sessions as well. This has led to him being excluded from the Dubai training camp by Gallardo, as per Marca. The breaking point for Karim Benzema seems to have been after the match against Cristiano Ronaldo.

Al Ittihad was beaten 2-5 in the game and the striker was exposed to severe criticism. This led to him deactivating his social media account and missing training ever since. Karim Benzema’s exclusion also puts his future at the club in jeopardy with many European and MLS clubs said to be interested in him, yet to make an official approach. It is also believed that the Frenchman would prefer a return to Europe. However, the story between Benzema and Al Ittihad is not completely over yet. Especially if they can satisfy his previous demand.

Following their poor results in December, the French star had reportedly urged the club to sign new players, the failure of which meant he would not return to the club. Karim Benzema’s absence seems to have forced Al Ittihad’s hand as they are heavily linked to Atletico Madrid star Angel Correa. The 28-year-old striker is vastly experienced and has had a successful time with the Madrid-based club.

Karim Benzema knows Correa’s quality quite well, having played against him in the heated Madrid derbies across the years. Moreover, the situation is a win-win for both, the veteran and his club. Correa would add to the squad’s attacking strengths and can be a perfect Benzema replacement in the future. It remains to be seen if Al Ittihad pay the $66 million demanded by Diego Simeone and Co.
