With Marta retiring, is Alex Morgan now the undisputed queen of soccer?

Even for the wrong reasons, Alex Morgan has recurrently sent shockwaves in soccer since the 2023 World Cup crash. She was always in the news for repeated trysts with injuries. Morgan herself, and we all were shocked to find out she did not make the USWNT’s Olympic squad. Finally, she gave it like a bolt from the blue when she announced her retirement and played her last match on Sunday when the San Diego Wave lost to the NC Courage.

Last year, when Morgan’s strike partner Megan Rapinoe announced retirement, the former stressed she had not even mulled about her farewell. Even after the premature World Cup exit in 2023, the US legend candidly teased she would feature in the upcoming US-hosted World Cup in 2027.

“I’m not planning to hang up my boots any time soon,” Morgan had said in a post-game presser in August 2023.

A year and a few weeks later, we learn that Morgan, who is expecting a second child, is all set for her last dance. While fans are yet to comprehend that the 35-year-old won’t play pro ball again, certain users on the web have fueled their shock. Because, Morgan’s August interview, in which she dismissed her retirement, is now doing rounds on X.

Seeing this, many hardcore fans have demanded the Orlando Pride and San Diego Wave legend come out of retirement.

It is no big deal for soccer stars to come out of retirement. Had Lionel Messi stuck to his retirement decision after the 2016 Copa, he would never have kissed the Qatar World Cup in 2022. NBA icon Michael Jordan coming out of retirement twice is a household story in the American sporting lore. Hence, fans really hope Alex Morgan also takes the same route as these fellow sporting greats.

“I hope she pulls a Marta and unretires for the next World Cup,” a user said on X. Rumors notably have it that Marta could have her farewell while playing for Brazil in the 2027 World Cup. The legendary Brazilian striker had earlier announced that she would play her last in Brazil’s Olympic gold medal game against the USWNT. But it seems there’s a chance for Marta’s second coming. And so fans want Morgan’s second coming too.

A fan trying to bitterly take a hard-to-swallow pill that is Alex Morgan’s retirement. But as they say, Morgan’s USWNT snub for the Olympics and her pregnancy seem to be the deciding factors.

Truer words must not have been spoken. The 35-year-old revealed she was absolutely shocked to learn about the Olympic snub. Besides, while she is battling recurring injuries, a young USWNT bunch has already taken charge of the Olympic win. So it’s no surprise that Morgan has decided to call it a day.

Indeed, it looked like Alex Morgan had the fuel to last more in the beautiful game. She was instrumental in the USWNT’s CONCACAF W Gold Cup win. She started the NWSL with a Challenge Cup win with the SD Wave. But it is what it is and Morgan has had her swan song.
