The Super League might be back in business soon, with the European Court of Justice ruling in their favor. However, while this might be great news for clubs around the world, English sides might still miss out on participating in the tournament. According to reports, the new Football Governance Bill could block Premier League teams from being a part of the independent tournament.

Earlier today, the European Court of Justice ruled in the Super League’s favor, claiming FIFA and UEFA’s decision to block the formation of the league is unlawful. A22, the organization backing the ESL in their appeal, had claimed that the two football governing bodies had breached the competition law to block the league before its inception.

While ESL might have won their fight against FIFA and UEFA, things still look bleak for English sides. With the UK government set to bring out the new Football Governance Bill later in 2024, teams playing under the English Football Association’s banner could be barred from playing in the independent league. According to The Telegraph’s journalist Ben Rumsby, “Am told that the new Football Governance Bill will stop licensed clubs from joining breakaway competitions. So no chance of Premier League teams joining a rebel Super League unless they want to be thrown out of English football.”

This could be a massive blow for the Premier League sides. Big English clubs such as Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal were some of the first members of the Super League before FIFA and UEFA imposed their ban on the tournament.

In their tweet, the organization claimed, “We have won the #RightToCompete. The UEFA monopoly is over. Football is FREE. Clubs are now free from the threat of sanction AND free to determine their own futures. For fans: We propose free viewing of all Super League matches. For clubs: Revenues and solidarity spending will be guaranteed.”

However, the court’s ruling does not mean the Super League will be functional. In their closing statement, the ECJ made it clear that the decision was solely on the ban put on the league by FIFA and UEFA and it had nothing to do with the project’s approval.
