During his Barcelona days, there was a particular instance when Messi left Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone utterly clueless about how to stop him. This revelation came from Simeone’s former defender, Kieran Trippier. In an interview with GOAL, the former Tottenham right-back had nothing but praise for Messi.

He said, “Obviously, when Messi is on the pitch, anything can happen in any moment. But no for me it was a great experience.” Interestingly, the interviewer asked how one prepares to mark a player like Messi. To which Trippier replied, “You can’t, to be fair and it’s funny because obviously, [Diego] Simeone was the manager. Both Argentinian and even he was just saying before the meetings just basically like ‘pray!’ Yeah, he’s just…you just can’t do anything. You can’t organise or set up to stop him because he’s that unique.”

Indeed, this is quite an interesting revelation from the 33-year-old Premier League star. It shows that even genius managers don’t have plans to stop Messi. Meanwhile, in another intriguing disclosure, while Trippier admires Messi, his own son seems to have a different idol. In fact, Trippier once shared an anecdote where his son chose Kylian Mbappe over him!

Kieran Trippier got snubbed by his son over Kylian Mbappe

Before the Champions League group stage match between PSG and Newcastle United, Trippier shared that his son had expressed his desire to walk onto the pitch alongside Kylian Mbappe instead of him. According to ESPN, he stated, “[My son] wanted to walk out with [Mbappe] instead of me. It was something I wasn’t really happy with. He’s always watching his clips on YouTube. I told him, ‘If you walk out with him, don’t look at me in the tunnel.’”
