In the world of Hollywood and professional soccer, success stories often go hand in hand. Celebrities venturing into the realm of sports ownership have become a common sight in recent years. One such example is the inspiring journey of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, who acquired Wrexham AFC back in 2021 and turned the struggling club into a powerhouse within a few short years.
Wrexham AFC, a Welsh club stuck in the fifth division, has experienced a true transformation under the ownership of Reynolds and McElhenney. With their passion and dedication, the duo has propelled the club to new heights, becoming the champions of the National League and garnering a level of popularity comparable to other top clubs. Jonny Owen, a renowned Welsh actor, has set his sights on buying his hometown club, Merthyr Town FC, and guiding them to the Premier League. While Owen’s net worth of $5 million pales in comparison to Reynolds’ $350 million, he is undeterred by the financial discrepancy and remains optimistic about his chances of replicating Wrexham’s story.
In a recent radio interview, Owen and his wife Vicky McClure shed light on their ventures, including their production company, ‘Build Your Own Film’. Interestingly, the company has been thriving in recent times. The production company is already a sponsor for Merthyr Town’s away kit, but the actor wants to fully own the club.

Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Owen bravely stated, “I’m hoping in time if it can get big enough, I’d like to buy Merthyr and take them up to the Premier League! That’s what I’d like”. This is a similar dream to what Ryan and Rob are trying to do with Wrexham. This is no doubt a lofty ambition, given the team currently plays in the seventh division.

As the start of the League Two season approaches, Wrexham is facing some challenges. The team received its first blow when defender Jordan Tunnicliffe, who has been struggling with a calf injury, was ruled out for the first game. And then came a devastating setback in the form of Paul Mullin, who was Wrexham’s top goal scorer last season.
During the pre-season match against Manchester United, Mullin sustained a serious injury. In an unfortunate collision with opposition goalkeeper Nathan Bishop, he suffered a ruptured lung injury. This injury will keep him out of action for six to eight weeks. This undoubtedly leaves a significant void within the team heading into League Two. It will be intriguing to witness how the club handles these setbacks and adjusts accordingly.
