It has been a month since Earnie Stewart left the US Soccer Federation. The organization has been scrambling ever since to find a replacement to fill the post of Sporting Director. It became a serious race against time as USMNT is desperate for a new head coach. With many important tournaments coming up, one of the first puzzles for the Sporting Director will be to find a suitable name to carry the team through the tournaments.

The USA will host the 2024 edition of Copa America. The country had already won the hosting rights for the 2026 World Cup. After a better performance from USMNT than expected in Qatar, fans are expecting miraculous results from the team in the upcoming tournaments.

US Soccer Federation’s president Cindy Parlow Cone had said that the federation is targeting to close this position before the FIFA women’s World Cup. According to several reports, they are in touch with a New York-based firm Sportsology to lead the search.

USMNT legend is a potential prospect

According to a plethora of reports, the USSF is thinking about USMNT legend Oguchi Onyewu for the position of Sporting Director. Apart from a 10-year-long decorated career for USMNT, he has also been in a managerial position for around 5 years. While his resume looks like he is fit for the job, not all fans are excited. Some are doubting and questioning the choice, while some are extremely discontent with the option.

One fan on Twitter took it to a whole new level. He wrote, “Why is US Soccer obsessed with handing out important jobs to underqualified people? We have enough data points to show that being a good front-office executive or manager doesn’t require any playing experience. Having USMNT caps should not matter.” This rant by the fan would attract another USMNT legend for an epic reply.
