The United States Women’s National Team(USWNT) faced a challenging encounter against the Netherlands during the 2023 Women’s World Cup. The highly anticipated Group E match turned out to be a nail-biting contest, leaving fans disappointed as the United States could only manage a 1-1 draw.
With the Netherlands leading by 1-0 at the break, USWNT’s hunt for a goal began. But what followed was a critical event that added even more intensity to the game. A hard tackle by Netherlands midfielder, Van de Donk, on the US captain Lindsey Horan resulted in a reaction from Horan that required teammate Julie Ertz’s attention.

In an interview, the USA captain accepted the help she received from the team’s veteran player Julie Ertz, who has over 100 appearances for USWNT. Reminding Horan of the yellow card against Vietnam, Julie Ertz pleaded, “Linds, please, don’t get another yellow card. Just score this goal to shut everyone up.”
And that’s what happened. After recovering from the tackle, Horan seemed determined, and rightly so; she showed her prowess by heading a corner to the back of the net and levelling the score.

After such tension on field, fans saw a very contrasting moment off the field. The USWNT skipper hugged her club football teammate, Van de Donk. In an interview after the match, Horan praised Van de Donk saying, “Dan is that type of player — when she’s on my team it’s incredible, because she’s going to fight to that last second to win a game or go into that last tackle,” Horan said.

She added, “That’s what she did, and unfortunately I didn’t take it in a good way. I got a little heated and she got to hear it.”
After this upset by the Netherlands, the Stars and Stripes are preparing for their next game against Portugal. The US team leads Group E with 4 points, one win and one draw. The Netherlands are also level. America, however, leads the group due to goal difference.
