David Beckham was the talisman for Manchester United in its golden era. But when he got an opportunity to leave 20 years ago, he did so with much reluctance. In light of the release of ‘Beckham,’ a Netflix documentary producer recently expressed the negative effects of Beckham’s exit from the Red side of Manchester.

When you have been the face of a club, it makes a great mark in your own life.  Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United was at the pinnacle of success when Beckham left. The former Manchester United player received a bitter shoe gesture from the coach after the FA Cup match against Arsenal. The subsequent events opened the doors for his exit.

Netflix released David Beckham’s documentary, ‘Beckham’ which also includes his wife Victoria Beckham. The series covers the entire career of the soccer icon from the beginning. Amidst heartwrenching and sometimes over-the-top stories, one striking point was revealed by the producer, who revealed that David Beckham was heartbroken after he left United.

John Battasek, the producer in a recent interview with talkSPORT, said, “He will never get over leaving ManU, and you guys as footballers understand he will get over leaving ManU. He never wanted to and his heart was perfectly and is permanently broken by that.”

The Manchester United legend definitely regrets leaving his home club and the manager, who was a father figure to him. Beckham clearly stated that he never wanted to leave Manchester United and tried speaking to Sir Alex before leaving.

 

Beckham had to leave United because of the declining relationship between him and the former United coach. Beckham ignited the strained relationship with Sir Alex when he provoked him to throw a shoe by swearing at an already angry manager.

Ferguson also said that corporate life was distracting Beckham from soccer.

In 2021, we saw how hard it was for Lionel Messi to leave Barcelona. He broke down in tears while announcing his exit. David Beckham’s break-up was also similar, and the winger was also going to miss his manager, who was like a father figure to him.

Battsek also said, “…Sir Alex, you know David has the utmost respect for him.” Fergie was also a tough manager who could deal severely, said the producer, who worked with him before. Even many players later said that Beckham was losing it a bit in the end with restlessness in the group.

Beckham moved to Real Madrid in July 2003 for a fee of $40 million. Beckham, after leaving Manchester United, had spells in different leagues apart from La Liga. The former England captain moved on to play for the LA Galaxy and AC Milan on loan. The Inter Miami owner finally retired with Paris Saint-Germain in 2013, ten years before the release of this documentary.
