Manchester City is the only English team apart from Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United to win a continental treble. No team has laid hands on the Premier League trophy in the last three years while the Cityzens gloriously completed a PL three-peat. But where does this put Manchester City on the English soccer map? Are they any better than other top clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester United from a historical perspective? Renowned English soccer analyst Simon Jordan thinks City has miles to go to be a ‘legacy club’ like the Reds and the Red Devils.

Manchester United has won a record 20 Premier League titles. United also has three UEFA Champions League titles to their credit. Liverpool, on the other hand, has won 19 PL titles and five UCL trophies. Meanwhile, the reigning English champions only have nine PL titles and one UCL title in comparison.

Whether Manchester City is a legacy club or not became a talking point in talkSPORT’s preview episode of the City-Real Madrid UCL tie. Co-host Jim White asked Simon Jordan if City would boast as rich a legacy as other heavyweights if they won consecutive Champions League titles. ” I think if you give Manchester City 20 years more they might have the same reach, heritage, and iconic values that Liverpool and Man United have.” White responded to this claim saying 20 years is an outlandish waiting time for the Sky Blues to scale the peaks scaled by other English clubs.

“It’s taken Liverpool and Man United that amount of time to produce the kind of legacies that they’ve got man. Liverpool didn’t win anything for 30 years… yet still had massive reach in the hearts and minds of people around the world,” Jordan added in response. He concluded by saying the feat is achievable if the Cityzens consistently dominate tournaments. He also iterated that Pep Guardiola‘s men have not reached the level yet despite breaking multiple records. Anyhow, the Manchester club is strongly faring in their UCL title defense, as they stood their ground against the mighty Real Madrid last night.

Manchester City’s draw against Madrid gives a déjà vu of last year’s monumental win

In what can be called a final before the actual UCL final, 14-time champions Real Madrid took on the defending champions Manchester City in the first leg of the quarter-finals last night. Similar to last year, Madrid hosted the first leg in the Santiago Bernabeu. Despite having the home advantage, the Blancos settled for a draw against Guardiola’s men. Anyhow, entertainment peaked during the game, as the deadly clash ended with a 3-3 scoreline.

Now, City awaits Madrid at their home in the Etihad Stadium. Last year also, the Sky Blues secured a draw at the Bernabeu. But later, when the Blancos came to Etihad, they had walked into an ambush. The Manchester club ripped Madrid apart with a 4-0 scoreline. They will now be looking forward to inflicting similar damage on Europe’s most successful team. Considering how the likes of Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva have fared last night, it won’t be beyond the Cityzens to outclass the Merengues. Successfully retaining their European crown would add to their growing legacy as they aim to emulate their English rivals.
