Wrexham AFC doesn’t seem to be taking any risks. Experiencing drastic performance improvements for the past few seasons, the third-oldest club in the world has entered into one of the most crucial years. Hence, one person they would be looking up to is its striker Paul Mullin who led them to two consecutive promotions. But the club seems to have faced a setback with their early ambitions in League One, as Phil Parkinson provided a concerning update about the Englishman.
According to the Leader, Mullin will not be available for the Red Dragons for their opening period of the 2024-25 season. Coach Parkinson feels that there is no other option but for him to stay away for a few games due to his spine surgery.
Parkinson said, “Mulls is going to be close to maybe missing a couple of games at the start of the season if everything goes well but no more than that,” also giving hope about his return.

Mullin had an issue with his lower back and hamstring for quite a long time and had to undergo surgery in mid-June in London. Initially thinking that rest would suffice, Mullin and the medical consultants felt better about sorting the issue through an operation. The forward was claimed to have undergone conservative treatment for the past three years but couldn’t get a permanent solution with it.

Therefore, Parkinson also said, “Having the operation now gives him the best chance to only miss the start of the season,” suggesting surgery to be helpful in Mullin’s pursuits. However, the manager is optimistic about Mullin’s ability to return soon.

Despite some apprehension about the striker’s availability for a few games starting next season, Parkinson is confident about his fitness. Regarding his ability to recover, the manager said, “It is a blow but he is a fit lad and doesn’t take long to get back. He will have his own mini pre-season and we will get him back as fit as we can,” suggesting he may not miss more than two or three matches.

However, it is clear that he won’t make it to the upcoming preseason games against Bournemouth, Chelsea, and Vancouver Whitecaps. Mullin also missed the last 6 league games at the beginning of last season due to lung issues.
Regardless, the 29-year-old was back to his best, scoring 24 goals in 38 matches and winning the club Player of the Season. Now you know where Parkinson’s calmness comes from. With such an incredible ability to make comebacks, fans can take a breather and expect the club to stay resilient until he returns.
