There may be no such thing as terrible publicity. But it all went downhill for the MLS club New England Revolution recently. With people desiring to see Lionel Messi play, it automatically means ticket sales will rise. However, the soccer franchise’s recent intended ticket sales campaign went viral; only to have a glaring mistake made by an employee.

The MLS franchise’s ticket sales rep sent a contentious email that suggested fans could watch and buy tickets to their game against Inter Miami because there was a “100% chance” to see Messi score at the Gillette stadium. As reported earlier, they uncovered the email on social media, and the club received considerable flak.

The New England Revolution MLS franchise is owned by the same proprietors as the New England Patriots. Robert Kraft and his son, Jonathan Kraft, own the franchises. Regardless, the fans forced the team to issue a statement following the email blunder. While it might seem like the franchise’s senior marketing team mooted the campaign, it was a mistake made by a new representative. According to this report in the Daily Mail, one of the club’s inside sales managers shared an apology via email that read:

USA Today via Reuters

“On behalf of the New England Revolution, I would like to apologize for the email you received with the subject ‘Secure Lionel Messi Tickets Today.’ Although we’re excited for our squad to match up against Inter Miami CF and Lionel Messi, the message and tone of this email did not align with the goals of our organization. Jonathan is a new representative and sent this email without the direction of the organization. Jonathan’s message was misguided as he was caught up in the hype of an amazing Leagues Cup final.”

The email also stated how the staff tried to create a sensational game day atmosphere. They wanted all it takes to improve the fan experience, which will ultimately help the Revs win. On one side of the coin, the young sales rep who made the mistake perhaps did so because of his inexperience. He probably thought the Messi angle would have sold tickets. But according to the Daily Mail report, the young employee has been ‘disciplined’.

But save some watch time for the youngster Stroud in the middle of the park as well. At just 20 years old, having made his debut for the Revs in February 2023, he could be part of the USMNT in the future. The player had stints with the USMNT U15s and U17s.
