An investment in the NWSL’s Kansas City Current is perhaps one of the many ways Patrick Mahomes is giving back to the city where he won three Super Bowl rings. To the joy of Mahomes and other investors, the Current had a grand opening to the 2024 NWSL season. Firstly, they started playing in their $117 million-worth new stadium- the CPKC stadium. And the opener was quite a nail-biter. KC beat 3x league champions, Portland Thorns in a 5-4 thriller. However, the Missouri-based club just hit its first bump on the road. The Current was forced to add their last year’s top goal scorer to their injury list!
During the tie against the Thorns, Kansas City was up two goals before the 30th minute. Brazilian superstar, Debinha helped the Current set the attacking rhythm like always. But in the 32nd minute, she contracted a hamstring injury and couldn’t continue. The latest KC Current injury update is that Debinha will miss three weeks of NWSL action because of the hamstring woe, as per Yahoo Sports. The first game that the 32-year-old will miss is Saturday’s league tie against Alex Morgan and Co. in San Diego.

Debinha joined the Current in 2023, and her first season was one for the books. She led Kansas City’s scoring with 9 goals. Hence, Vlatko Andonovski’s side is indeed looking at a big hollow with their attacking front facing an injury. Nevertheless, in a relieving update, the NWSL pauses till April 13 for the international break. Thereafter, Kansas City faces Gotham FC on the road, and that match will probably be the last one the Brazilian will miss. Anyhow, Kansas City already had a large injury list to deal with before Debinha got hurt. Who else will miss the game against San Diego Wave? Let’s find out.

KC Current’s injury list and Debinha’s potential replacement
Kansas City had Desiree Scott, Hanna Glas, and Mallory Weber on their season-ending injury list last year. Per recent updates, they remain on the list in 2024 as well. Besides, in light of Debinha’s hamstring injury, the club’s Head Coach confirmed that Michelle Cooper and Nichelle Prince are also nursing injuries. Along with the Brazilian veteran, they will also be on the sidelines in the Kansas City-San Diego tie.

Meanwhile, KC Current might deploy French forward, Claire Lavogez as the injured Debinha’s replacement. Andonovski said her gameplay is quite similar to that of the Brazilian. Lavogez notably played 26 minutes in KC’s NWSL opener. She completed eight of her 11 passes. The Mahomes-Co-owned side has started strongly. But if they were to continue the trend, they should be wary of their worrisome injury list.
