Aren’t drones loud enough to catch somebody’s attention? Canada’s women’s Olympic soccer team might not have thought that, as they allegedly used drones to spy on the New Zealand team’s training. The Canada WNT’s coach Beverly Priestman is facing an Olympic ban over the Spygate. Elsewhere, USMNT veteran Sam Mewis and star striker Midge Purce wonder what Priestman and Co. were thinking when they allegedly sent a drone to the opposition camp.
CanWNT’s drone use debacle became the talking point on Sam Mewis’ recent podcast episode featuring Midge Purce. Mewis pointed out that the Canada team is awaiting an ‘ethics’ training in light of the spying scandal. The ex-USWNT star asked Midge Purce to give her two cents on Canada’s alleged drone use. “It’s so wild. Did you think they weren’t gonna see the drone? I’m confused. Drones are loud. Like… cheat better,” said Midge Purce, sarcastically. The Gotham FC star did not stop there.

“Call the Patriots. Call Bill Belichick,” said Purce hinting the Canada WNT should learn tips from the veteran former New England Patriots coach. Purce’s unhinged jibe clearly alludes to the infamous Spygate scandal, according to which Belichick video-taped rival coaches’ signals during NFL games. Sam Mewis told Purce was going over the line and laughingly asked her to stop commenting further.
Besides being a laughingstock among fellow players such as Sam Mewis and Midge Purce, the Canada WNT is awaiting far more intense ramifications for their involvement in the spying scam. What are they?
Canada WNT risks losing their 2020 Olympic gold
On the back of the Canada WNT’s alleged spying on the New Zealand team in Paris, the International Olympic Committee could strip the team of its gold medal from the Tokyo Olympics. Besides, FIFA has launched an investigation into the Canada team’s alleged drone usage. If found guilty, the ramifications could only turn worse. Meanwhile, the Canada Soccer Federation’s chief Kevin Blue has admitted he was aware of the Canada men’s team’s drone usage as well.

Blue said the Canada MNT used a drone during the Copa America to spy on Argentina’s training en route to the semi-final. Anyhow, coach Jesse Marsch said he was made aware of the incident after the tournament. Notably, Canada also lost to Argentina in the semi-final, proving that drone usage, if any, was worthless at the end of the day. Though the Canada MNT won’t take as much heat as its WNT, Marsch and Co. are indeed under the negative limelight.
