In a nation where it doesn’t take long for the media to turn on their players, it’s hard to be a player for the Three Lions. England suffered a surprising defeat at the hands of Iceland, with the team unable to penetrate their opposition’s defense. While most players struggled to find the mark, the media was all over Bukayo Saka despite being brought in as a substitute in the 65th minute.
English legend Rio Ferdinand was less than pleased with their conduct with the ex-defender slamming them out for singling out the Arsenal star. Talking on his Vibe with Five podcast Ferdinand bashed the journalists claiming instead of supporting the players, all they do, is drag them down before an important tournament.
The former Manchester United star stated, “It was like I woke up and thought Saka played the whole game. Did he miss five chances or did he miss a penalty? That’s what I was thinking to myself. Then I thought these guys who wrote this stuff must have been in a WhatsApp group and thought, let’s put this out, and let’s set the tone for the tournament. If I’m a young player like Saka, I’m sitting there thinking this is my media. I’m meant to be bouncing on with this tournament and them going ‘go on boys’, but our media don’t do that.”

Ferdinand has every right to call out the media outlets with Bukayo Saka, given unusual flak for his performance. It’s also important to note the Arsenal star has been suffering from fitness issues and blaming him for a defeat despite coming on as a substitute is just outrageous!
Gareth Southgate needs to provide Bukayo Saka with some well-deserved rest
It’s evident that Bukayo Saka is a key player for the Three Lions, but the player is in desperate need of some time off the field. Saka was present for an arduous campaign for Arsenal this season and hasn’t been in his best shape joining up with his national teammates. With Gareth Southgate spoiled for options in his attack, it wouldn’t hurt the manager to let the Gunners star have a couple of games off while he fields the likes of Cole Palmer or Anthony Gordon on the flanks.
While this will give Saka some rest, both Palmer and Gordon will also get the chance to impress for the Three Lions after an incredible Premier League campaign. Additionally, providing Saka with some rest will also allow Southgate to call on his services in the latter stages of the tournament without worrying about the player’s fitness.
