The MLS club, whose ownership comprises Matthew McConaughey ($160 million net worth), is languishing 8th on the Western Conference table. It is on 25 points after 19 games with seven wins and four draws. The club has been without a sporting director since January after Claudio Reyna left. It came after Reyna sparked controversy around Gregg Berhalter, who didn’t start his son during Qatar FIFA World Cup.
Reyna held the sporting director position at Austin FC since 2019, after spending six years with New York City FC in a similar role. The sporting director role has been gaining significance recently. It is a strategic role that bridges on-field strategies with business ones. It intends to create a high-performing environment by bringing together all the departments in the club.?

The report further states it will be a multi-year deal, and an announcement is imminent. It also comes in the wake of the Austin FC superstar Jon Callagher making it to the MLS All-Star roster for the Arsenal game. However, the club has benefitted a lot from their former coach Claudio Reyna, the one who helped them transition better whenever there is a managerial change.

Despite leaving his sporting director role, Reyna stayed with the club. Austin FC announced a few changes after Reyna stepped down. To transition smoothly, the club appointed Reyna as a technical advisor. Also, head coach Josh Wolff got the additional responsibility of Interim Chief Soccer Officer.

Now with the appointment of Borrell, Wolff will leave his additional responsibilities to focus on coaching. But it seems Reyna has left the club completely. The official website removed the name of Claudio Reyna within three months of his technical advisor appointment. Austin FC has moved on with a new sporting director appointment and it remains to be seen where Reyna joins next.
