Glen Hoddle is someone David Beckham knows quite well. The former England boss does not hold a special place with the Beckham family. His criticism of the soccer star in the 1998 World Cup was headline-making. It resulted in Beckham’s mother, Sandra, getting involved and lashing out at Hoddle, a topic highlighted in the recent ‘Beckham’ documentary. Recently, Hoddle surprised soccer fans by finally giving his take on the controversial incident on the Talksport show.

The much-awaited Beckham documentary is a tremendous hit among fans. Masterfully created by Fisher Stevens, the documentary showcases the human side of the legendary icon besides his soccer career. Interestingly, there were also plans for Hoddle to appear in the show, which he ultimately turned down. It seems both parties still haven’t patched up.

After years of silence, Glen Hoddle finally responded to criticism from the Beckhams addressed in the documentary. However, Hoddle stated, “But I haven’t seen the documentary. I have no worries about what he said. If the film goes well, I wish him all the very best. I believe his mom had a little dig at me. Well, I tell you what, my mom would have defended me to the hell as well.

The former Tottenham man seems far from bothered by the criticism. Regardless of the issues, Hoddle expressed his admiration for Beckham’s soccer abilities.

He explained, “I have no problems with David. He was a fabulous player for me and one of the best players this country has ever produced“. On the bright side, it is a valid statement, considering Beckham nearly won the Ballon d’Or in 1999. In addition, Hoddle recognized Beckham’s qualities and presented him with his first international cap in 1996. Despite having a tremendous relationship initially, things changed a lot over the next two years, such that Sandra even put Hoddle on her ‘hit list’.

From friend to foe: Hoddle ends up in the Beckham ‘hit-list’

Before the 1998 World Cup, Hoddle remarked that Beckham lost his focus on soccer. That resulted in Beckham starting from the bench for the tournament opener. However, the big moment was the round of 16 tie against Argentina. Beckham received a red card with the match at 2-2, a decision which cost England dearly as they lost control and lost the penalty shootout. Hoddle remarked, “It( red card) cost us, it cost us dearly.”

Hoddle’s comments did not amuse Sandra as she lashed at him, stating, “I just put him on my hit list – people that upset me.” She also added how Hoddle failed to protect a 23-year-old Beckham. England’s elimination resulted in the Beckham family facing abuse from fans and the media.
