Soccer icon David Beckham went through one of the roughest phases in his career following his moment of madness in the 1998 World Cup. English fans were all over the ex-Manchester United star following the incident, holding him responsible for the team’s failure to lift the coveted trophy. However, it seems like those wounds have healed with time. In an interview with Allure Magazine, Beckham’s wife, Victoria, opened up on a surprising apology from the fans during one of their outings.

David Beckham expressed his emotions from the incident in his Netflix docuseries BECKHAM. The Inter Miami owner stated things had hit an all-time low as fans around England were all over him throughout the season, booing him at every single appearance.

Former England star receives a surprise apology from fans

In an interview with fashion magazine Allure, fashionista Victoria Beckham opened up about an interesting incident during one of her outings with her husband. The former Spice Girl and her husband were left surprised as fans had left a note for them under their windscreen.

 

As described by Allure, “The other night, me and David drove to our country house and went to the local pub,” she says. When they got back to their car, “someone had put a note under the windscreen wiper: ‘Dear Posh and Becks, on behalf of all the British football fans, we are sorry.’ David joked, ‘We need to go out and lap this up more often.’”

The 1998 World Cup saw the infamous moment of madness from David Beckham. The Englishman made a rash foul on Argentina’s Diego Simeone that saw him being immediately sent off the game. England, being a man down, tried their best but were defeated by the Albiceleste, getting knocked out of the tournament in the process.

David Beckham opens up on the outrage following the 1998 World Cup incident

During his Netflix docuseries BECKHAM, the former England international opened up about the backlash following his red card against Argentina. The player stated he was at one of the lowest points in his career during that time and was getting booed wherever he went.

Beckham stated, “I don’t think I’ve ever talked about it just because I can’t. I find it hard to talk through what I went through because it was so extreme. The whole country hated me. Hated me. Wherever I went, I got abuse every single day. I wasn’t eating, I wasn’t sleeping, I was a mess.”

Twenty-five years after the incident, it seems like fans are slowly starting to forgive the player for his minor lapse in judgment. However, some of his former teammates are yet to heal from the wounds, with Roy Keane claiming he still resents Beckham for what went down during the World Cup.
