It is a little more than 48 hours to go for the soccer bonanza. The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) is back this season and is expected to be nothing like the previous ones. Starting March 15, 2024, the premier women’s soccer league in the US will see more teams, more matches, and more excitement. With 14 teams in this edition, how are the squads built up?

Since this is a huge makeover apart from the technological and kit innovation brought in by the league, it will be interesting to see how the teams have changed. Here we look at how the roster of all fourteen teams in terms of player changes and lineups.

1. Angel City FC

The team from Los Angeles made its debut in 2022 but has shown good progress. After failing to qualify for the first season It reached the quarterfinals in 2023. The team has acquired 4 new players this season Messiah Bright, Rocky Rodríguez Gisele Thompson, and Casey Phair.

Their most exciting signing is Phair from South Korea, who was the youngest player to play in a World Cup at 16 years. However, Angel City will not have the services of S. Camberos and S. McCaskill who moved to Bay FC and San Diego Wave. Amandine Henry dropped out of the squad and will join Lille on loan. The 26 chosen for this season are.

2. Bay FC

The rookie club will be excited to start its campaign in this iconic edition. The club already has gathered a competent squad with stars like Racheal Kundananji and the UEFA Champions League. The club also announced its final roster.

3. Chicago Red Stars

The two-time Championship runners-up are still searching for their maiden title. This year the club will hope for a turn of fortune under its new owner, Laura Ricketts. Nevertheless, players Tierna Davidson and Casey Krueger, Yuki Nagasato, and Arin Wright have all left the club.

It will see quite a lot of new faces in the form of  Samantha Staab traded from Washington Spirit. Additionally, Maximiliane Rall from Bayern Munich W, Sydney  Schneider, and Mackenzie Wood will be back from loan adding to a lot of changes to the squad.

4. NJ/NY Gotham FC

The 2023 Cup champions arrive without their star defender Ali Krieger due to her retirement. Meanwhile, it has added another 4 USWNT players to the squad as free agents in the form of Crystal Dunn, Tierna Davidson, Rose Lavelle, and Emily Sonnett, and the transfer of Cassie Miller from Kansas City. The transferouts include Kristie Mewis, Imani Dorsey, Mandy Haught, and Ifeoma Onumonu. Taylor Smith will head to Brighton W on loan. This is how their lineup presents for 2024.

5. Houston Dash

Still seeking consistency, Houston Dash qualified for the playoff just once. But with the new signings, things may help them add another qualification to their tally. The club traded Cece Kizer from Kansas City Current for Nichelle Prince. Additionally, they have signed the Swed Elin Rubensson. Players, Joelle Anderson and Cameron Tucker have been transferred out.

6. Kansas City Current

Kansas City Current can be proud of having the first sports professional stadium for women as home. Nevertheless, the club had to forfeit the legendary Sam Mewis due to retirement. After last season’s debacle finishing eleventh, they will try to finish better this time. Their most exciting signing is the iconic Brazilian forward Bia Zaneratto from Palmeiras W. Other additions include Sophia Braun and R. Steigleder. On the other hand, Cassie Miller, Mimmi Larsson, Cecelia Kizer, Cecelia Kizer, and Addisyn Merrick are the players to leave.

7. North Carolina Courage

The most successful team in the NWSL with 3 Shields and 2 Championships, the Courage will once again enter the 2024 season as favorites. The 2023 Challenge Cup winner acquired, Ashley Sanchez from Washington Spirit and Felicitas Rauch from Wolfsburg W. Emily Fox and R. M. Madsen have left to join clubs in England while Theresa Boade and Katelyn Rowland joined Bay FC.

8. Orlando Pride

The 2017 NWSL semifinalists just missed out on playoffs. Making several changes to their squad, their best signings are Barbra Banda from Shanghai Shengli W and Angelina from OL Reign. Morgan Gautrat, Evelina Duljan Simone Charley, Kylie Strom, and McKinley Crone are the other incoming., Thais Reiss, Messiah Bright, and Carly Nelson are transferred to other clubs.

9. Portland Thorns

The team from Oregon and triple Shield winners will be without Crystal Dunn who signed with current Champions Gotham FC. Contrarily, the club has now hired two legends, Christine Sinclair and Becky Sauerbrunn along with Chelsea W giant Jessie Fleming. Forward Rocky Rodriguez, Emily Menges, and Hannah Betfort have left. 10. Racing Louisville FC

Even though they went a bit low-key with signings this year, their main signings are Ellie Jean from Gotham and Taylor Kornieck from San Diego Wave apart from, Linda Motlhalo, Arin Wright, and Elexa Bahr. Louisville let go of Shuang Wang to Tottenham and Julia Lester to Seattle Reign. The club also expecting to make it to the playoffs posted their 2024 squad on Instagram.

11. Seattle Reign FC

Reign was heartbroken after losing out to Gotham FC in the finals last year. Its legend Megan Rapinoe has retired. New joiners would be midfielder Angharad James and defender Lily Woodham from Tottenham and reading along with Jimena Lopez, M. Weinert, and Julia Lester. Meanwhile,  Emily Sonnett and Rose Lavelle went to join Gotham FC. L. Kmetovski, Alyssa Malonson, and Elyse Bennett are other departures.

12. San Diego Wave FC

After a terrific season last time, Wave looks to impress with major recruitments. Savannah McCaskill from Angel City FC, Hanna Lundkvist from Spanish giants Valencia, and Kaitlyn Torpey are an additional boost. Jessica Yanez, Belle Briede, M. Dougherty, Mia Irène Gyau, and Rachel Hill are out apart from trading off Taylor Kornieck.

13. Utah Royals

Utah is making a comeback after leaving NWSL in 2020 after leaving for Kansas. As a part of an expansion team Utah has made considerable changes. Louisville forward Paige Monaghan, Orlando Pride’s Mikayla Cluff, Gotham FC’s Michele Vasconcelos, Imani Dorsey, and forward Ifeoma Onumonu join them.

14. Washington Spirit

Trinity Rodman’s team would like to repeat their 2021 spell. In pursuit, they have added five rookies Hal Hershfelt, Makenna Morris, and C. Bethune along with Courtney Brown and defender Kate Wiesner. Heather Stainbrook was an additional midfielder gained. Sam Staab and Ashley Sanchez are their key exits.
