The drama unfolded in the final moments of the transfer window when Wrexham. With the financial backing of Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds, the Welsh club made a bold move to strengthen their squad. They agreed to pay a substantial $630,000 transfer fee to rivals Harrogate Town in order to bring Luke Armstrong into their ranks, as a replacement for the injured Paul Mullin.
The club had also discussed personal terms with Armstrong, but their plans were foiled after time proved to be their enemy. Phil Parkinson revealed that the first hint of trouble came around 12:30 AM, stating For whatever reason, the deal didn’t get over the line. In these situations, we analyze why it (paperwork) didn’t get through.” Wrexham AFC shared the news on Saturday in which they claimed that FA rejected the transfer of Luke Armstrong, as they were unable to complete the paperwork and registration for Armstrong in time.
Although the Red Dragons weren’t able to materialize the deal, they were considering appealing the EFL’s decision and registering, what would be, their record new signing.
In an official statement shared by Wrexham AFC, Ryan Reynold’s side, however, stated, ‘Having reviewed the additional information received from the EFL and considered this in the context of the submission of the documents for the transfer of Luke Armstrong from Harrogate Town, the Club have determined there is no reasonable chance of success if we were to appeal the EFL’s decision to reject the transfer.’
With the transfer window now closed, disappointment looms large not only for Wrexham but also for Luke Armstrong and Harrogate Town, who were equally eager to see this deal come to fruition. Wrexham AFC also apologized to Armstrong for not finalizing the deal and expressed their disappointment for not completing the transfer in this window
Nevertheless, Wrexham have added some much-needed quality to their squad with seven signings. What’s ahead for the Welsh outfit?
What does this mean for Wrexham’s run for the title?
With some standout buys like George Evans, Arthur Okonkwo, and James McClean in their squad now, Wrexham looks better than ever. But an attacking option should have been prioritized in the squad, as their star striker Paul Mullin succumbed to a lung injury in a pre-season friendly against Manchester United.
Wrexham will need to learn from their mistakes and make sure that they are prepared for future transfer windows. They will also need to find a way to replace Mullin’s goals, as he was one of their top scorers last season. The failure to sign Armstrong is a setback for Wrexham, but it is not the end of the world. The club still has a good squad, and they will be hoping to get back on track in their next game against Doncaster Rovers.
