When it comes to shoes, Nike, Adidas, and Puma are the top brands that people look for. Sure, there are over a thousand brands to choose from, however, these three have become household names in the clothing and brand industries. Even in soccer, all these brands are famous for creating soccer cleats for players. Be it Nike’s Mercurial CR7, Adidas’ Messi.1, or Puma’s Supercharge for Neymar, all have made some of the best boots.

Now, when it comes to making boots, various materials are used during the whole process. However, there’s one material that has been banned by the US authorities that have somehow disrupted the production of soccer boots.
Nike takes a major decision
Recently, the Oregon Senate introduced a bill that would ban the use of any part of a dead kangaroo or any product containing a part of a dead kangaroo. If seen, it would lead to unfavorable circumstances, including heavy fines and punishment.
“It’s unconscionable that millions of native wild animals in Australia have been killed for the sake of high-end soccer cleats worn by a subset of elite soccer players,” Sen. Prozanki said in January 2023. “I understand this legislation may have financial impact on some Oregon shoe manufacturers, but in the balance, Oregon should be standing on the humane side of this issue.” he added.

Hence, the American company Nike announced that it will stop making any product with kangaroo leather by the end of 2023. The announcement came just days after Puma also declared to drop the use of kangaroo leather.
The protest to ban the use of kangaroo products has been going a long way back. Back in March, several organizers protested in front of a Nike store in downtown Portland, Oregon. However, the bill has somehow given a sense of relief to active protestors.
Nike is set to use new material
The ban might be good news for protestors, but it has affected the cleats makers a bit. Nike used to make its famous ‘Tiempo’ soccer boots with kangaroo leather. Now the company will be making boots with proper synthetic stitching.
