Calling Lionel Messi a shortcut to success seems like a massive statement. However, the MLS has seen massive growth in the recent months following La Pulga’s move to Inter Miami last summer. The Argentine’s move to the United States has seen him take soccer to new heights across the country. However, La Pulga isn’t the only one who’s been a boon from the sports landscape in the country. Taylor Swift has been the talk of the town after she was spotted at the Kelce box suit at the Arrowhead Stadium in September.
Swift’s relationship with NFL star Travis Kelce has brought massive eyeballs to the sport, with even casual fans tuning in to see the guy the pop star is dating. However, while the NFL always had a strong fan base, the same cannot be said about MLS, who have got a lifeline following Lionel Messi’s arrival. While the NFL has always had a concrete model, it will be interesting to see if MLS can still hold its flag high in an era after Lionel Messi.

According to a recent Seton Hall University poll, one out of every five American fans wants to tune into the NFL Super Bowl LVIII to catch Taylor Swift performing during the event. The NFL has also seen a recent surge in female viewership across all demographics. The teenage group has seen the biggest spike in the past few months witnessing a staggering 51% hike in viewership.
Daniel Ladik, the chief of methodologies for the Seton Hall University poll, commented on Taylor’s impact on the NFL in his survey. Ladik stated, “The NFL would still be colossal without Taylor Swift. She just found a way to kick it into another gear. To have an individual have that much impact on something that they don’t play in, perform in, or are directly involved in, is unprecedented.”
Say all you want about it, but the Taylor Swift effect is 100% real. Swift’s arrival in the NFL scene has also seen the league generate a massive buzz in their sponsorship sources with experts suggesting the league has seen a 20% growth across all sponsorship streams. Meanwhile, Lionel Messi is not too far behind as the Argentine superstar has given the MLS a new life after stepping foot in the United States.

Does the MLS have a future beyond Lionel Messi?
The chief methodologies of his survey compared Lionel Messi’s impact on the MLS to Taylor Swift’s role with the NFL. Ladik also commented on MLS’s inability to deliver without Lionel Messi in his survey. “There is one huge fundamental difference between the two. MLS would be absolutely nothing in part of the global sports narrative without Messi.”
There is a lot of weight behind Ladik’s words as La Pulga’s arrival has seen MLS reach new heights. The Argentine star has helped the league register record viewership, sponsorships, and revenue in recent months. However, Inter Miami has been the center attraction amidst the boost, leaving the remaining clubs to catch up.
