There is no doubt that the Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi rivalry has often divided huge soccer fanbases. This has also led to several stars in the fear of online trolling from either side refusing to indulge in the debate. However, a Newcastle United star is not one of them. He selected Lionel Messi as the G.O.A.T despite having a soft spot for Cristiano Ronaldo earlier.
It was also a big surprise how easily he answered the question given the history behind it. This also proves that the debate will continue for further generations even after they retire.

Lionel Messi had a year to remember after winning multiple awards including his eight Ballon d’Or. On the other hand, Cristiano Ronaldo showed his frustrations after La Pulga won it. However, it looks like the achievements of the Argentinian are also helping him make new fans. In a rapid-fire round, Newcastle United star Harvey Barnes was asked about his opinion on the soccer world’s GOAT debate. The 26-year-old without any hesitation chose the 2022 World Cup winner over the Al Nassr star.

His choice is certainly a surprising one because of one particular reason. The Magpies star’s father Paul did an interview with TalkSport where he revealed that his son always had a soft spot for Cristiano Ronaldo. He even pointed out that Barnes would try to copy his game when the Portuguese star was making his name for Manchester United.
It will be interesting whether Harvey Barnes can give any explanation on the change of his opinion. However, the reality is he is not the first and last one who has changed his choice in the debate.

Ahead of the AFCON tournament, Hammers star Mohamed Kudus was also asked about his opinion on the debate. The Ghana star chose Lionel Messi without thinking even for one second. It came as a surprise because, in an earlier interview, he had called Cristiano Ronaldo an iconic player. He also added that he and his Ghana teammates would love to play against the Portuguese forward and his team in the World Cup.
Steven Gerrard also after moving to Saudi Arabia changed his side from La Pulga to the Al Nassr star. Chelsea legend Frank Lampard also made the same choice and pointed out that the Portuguese forward leads the debate because of his goals and assists in big games.
