The 2024 MLS season is less than a couple of months away. The year is going to be a huge one for Inter Miami as they head into a complete season with Lionel Messi. Hence, the team will try to make the best use of their designated player spot and muscle up the squad by the time of the roster announcement. According to reports, David Beckham’s team could let go of their star midfielder, Gregore.
The Miami team went into a crisis amid the 2021 violations of the player’s salary budget and roster regulations. MLS reduced its Target Allocated Money (TAM) directly by more than $2.2 million for two years. But now that it is over, the team could aim for the best use of both the designated player and the TAM wisely.

Inter Miami brought in Lionel Messi and his former Barcelona colleagues despite the budget limitations. This time, they will need to make the squad robust with other quality players as well. But the team is reportedly negotiating an exchange of midfielder Gregore for Vitor Cuesta with Botafogo.

Cuesta has been playing for the Brazilian team Internacional since 2017 and was on loan to Botafogo since 2022 until signing permanently for them in 2023. On the other hand, Gregore’s injury last season kept him out for most of Inter Miami’s games. Hence, the team may be looking for an alternative for the defensive midfielder via the 35-year-old Argentinian.
Gregore’s surgery for an injury, followed by rehabilitation, emerged as an enormous loss for the club in terms of his availability. Gregore arrived at Inter Miami in 2021 and is a designated player, so his absence could potentially let the chip off underutilized. Hence, Inter Miami’s eyes could have lit up once they saw an offer for the 29-year-old. Now there are chances of freeing up the designated player chip that also evaded their new high-profile signing, Luis Suarez.
