It’s no secret that LeBron James is one of the most popular and well-known athletes in the world. His domination of the NBA over the last two decades has seen him become a global icon and one of the most influential athletes on the planet.

Given James’s achievements in his career, it’s no surprise that many young athletes see him as an inspiration and think they can be like him. This mentality has been tackled by the USWNT star Megan Rapinoe. Rapinoe is also no stranger when speaking what’s on her mind and inspiring the young generation. She has recently done that by giving young athletes a reality check.

In an interview with ESPN, Rapinoe discusses the mentality of young athletes and how they often have the wrong idea of what it takes to be the best. “There’s definitely a lot of like, you’re amazing, you’re gonna be the best thing ever, at an age where you can’t tell,” the OL Reign star said. “There’s a very few athletes, like maybe LeBron James”.

Citing the example of LeBron James, Rapinoe explained how young athletes might start believing, “we are him,” before they have even developed their skills. She then gave her thoughts saying, “But you know I think for most of us it’s like we’ll see. we’ll see when you, you know hit your growth spurt, you hit puberty, or when you get into college”.

She further added, “We’ll see how injury-wise you stay. We’ll see how you sort of develop and how your game and everything develops into that sort of elite professional level”.

Rapinoe stressed that it takes time to become the best and that young athletes need to be patient and allowed to grow and develop.“It takes a little bit of time and I think, yeah like you said a lot of people get a lot of pressure really early on,” Rapinoe added.

She concluded by saying, “And then it just becomes about not, not being the best ever and you don’t really get to grow and you don’t really get to develop”. This is definitely an important message for young athletes to hear. Especially in today’s society where social media and the 24-hour news cycle can create a lot of pressure to perform at a high level at all times.
