Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe stand with French players
The French soccer community erupted on Friday when the women’s team captain pulled out of the national team and World Cup. Wendie Renard, who has 142 caps with France, is unhappy with the system around the national team and will not join the squad until conflicts with management are resolved. She penned down her message to the fans before stepping down.
In a social media post, she said, “I love France more than anything, I am not perfect, far from it, but I can no longer support the current system, which is far from the requirements of the highest level.” Renard also announced that she won’t play under such conditions in the World Cup. Now, her teammates Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Kadidiatou Diani have joined their captain in protest.

USWNT stars Rapinoe and Morgan penned down their support for the protesting players on social media. Rapinoe wrote, “With you captain,” in her post. Morgan also followed the suit by saying, “You Know it’s bad when the most capped player and captain can no longer support or play for France. My heart hurts for Wendie Renard, Marie-Antoinette Katoto, Kadidiatou Diani, and all their teammates.”
It will be interesting to see how the France Football Federation reacts to the demands of the protesting players. The French soccer fans will hope for a quick resolution as the World Cup is less than five months away, and they can’t miss seeing one of the best defenders in the tournament. The USWNT duo also stood up for a similar cause earlier.
