“Murder After Murder & Police Brutality” – As Colin Kaepernick Nears Dwayne Johnson’s XFL Move, Megan Rapinoe Details Why She Followed Ex-NFL Star

USWNT soccer icon Megan Rapinoe has only recently retired from international soccer. But that hasn’t stopped her from voicing her opinion as always and supporting the causes she believes in. In a recent interview ahead of her final home game for OL Reign, Rapinoe spoke out about supporting NFL star Colin Kaepernick’s pivotal “taking the knee” gesture.

In 2016, Kaepernick was pictured kneeling on one knee during the San Francisco 49ers preseason game while the national anthem was being played to raise awareness and bring racial and ethnic inequality in America to light with his gesture. Since then, even the Premier League in England has seen players kneel before games. The USWNT legend Rapinoe was one of the first American sports icons to follow Kaepernick’s gesture and she has now revealed why she did so. This comes shortly after news that XFL promoter Dwayne Johnson was looking to sign Kaepernick for the XFL.

Megan Rapinoe took the knee for the first time in September 2016, becoming the first white American athlete to follow Kaepernick’s gesture. Speaking in a one-on-one interview with King 5 Seattle, when asked about why she took a knee to support Kaepernick, Rapinoe said, “I think still to this day, I mean I think it’s just the right thing to do. you know just hearing at the time uh you know cap speak about it and the way that he was able to so clearly kind of cut through everything and just say like this is happening in our communities, we need help, we need support we need that allyship.”

“I just felt like this is a no-brainer and you know we were seeing obviously the cell phone footage and you know murder after murder and police brutality and you know I thought cap gave us this really brilliant easy way to articulate what he was saying with just an action and that was that was the kneeling.

“I wish that more athletes would have done it at the time. I think it could have been even more powerful but you know I think he you know changed the world and changed the narrative forever.”

Despite her work away from soccer and all the causes Rapinoe has supported and fought for, she still has certain sections of the media, fans, and celebrities who continue to criticize her. Piers Morgan was a recent one on this list.

Megan Rapinoe mocked by Piers Morgan after international retirement

Shortly after her final game for the USWNT against South Africa at Chicago’s Soldier Field stadium, British TV host Piers Morgan hit out at Rapinoe.

Morgan called Rapinoe “the world’s most annoying sports star” and further fired shots at the US Women’s soccer star by saying, “Oh shut up!….. Nobody wants to see you make the world a better place!”

However, despite all the criticism Rapinoe is looking forward to retirement along with her partner Sue Bird, and it’s certain that she will look to continue to support causes she believes in, even after hanging up her boots.
