Is Manchester United's gamble on Ruben Amorim a masterstroke or a recipe for disaster?

It’s confirmed. Manchester United has decided on Ruben Amorim to lead the club. At just 39 years old, Amorim has risen rapidly through the ranks of soccer management, impressing with his work at Sporting CP. Meanwhile, putting an end to Erik ten Hag’s era, United seems ready to offer a big salary to bring him on board.

Ruben Amorims managerial career is young but is filled with impressive accomplishments already. Amorim had taken Sporting to the league title in Portugal for the first time in nearly two decades. The Portuguese manager was so close to a move this summer to West Ham, where it is reported he had requested a $7.58 million-a-year contract offer. Although that move never materialized, let’s see what the current move brings for him financially.

What salary is Amorim expected to earn?

It is reported that he would earn three times the $2.44 million he is collecting at Sporting CP. Amorim would reportedly want at least $7.58 million in wages and possibly a bit more if he were to take over for Erik ten Hag, TalkSPORT said. If this were to happen, he would become one of the highest earners amongst managers in the Premier League, with salaries ranging between $11 million and $16 million.

Manchester United have accepted these demands and have signed one of Europe’s brightest young managers. The fact that Amorim asked $7.58 million from West Ham last summer establishes his market value, and United may well go beyond that to draw him to Old Trafford. The Premier League’s revenues, coupled with United’s resources, would place Amorim in the expectation of a significantly higher package than that which he is currently earning in Portugal.

Is Manchester United's gamble on Ruben Amorim a masterstroke or a recipe for disaster?

Have an interesting take?

Performance-related bonuses will probably form part of his managerial deal, especially given the profile of a club like Manchester United where Champions League qualification and successes in domestic cups are well on the agenda. A top-four finish in the league usually comes with other financial benefits that will also add to Amorims annual earnings.

The contract between Amorim and Sporting incorporates a release clause which is close to $9 million. So, United has to pay this amount to get him out of the deal, which is hardly a problem for the Red Devils or INEOS.

What’s next for Ruben Amorim and Manchester United?

This is massive step for Manchester United and Ruben Amorim. For United, a young, ambitious manager might bring fresh ideas and hope to regain its top position in English football. Currently, they are disappointingly 13th in the Premier League. For Amorim, this move would be a career milestone, showing his talent in the Premier League and managing a top club.

Amorim does come with an impressive CV. Since taking the reins at Sporting back in March 2020, Rúben Amorim has turned the club into a winning machine—he’s clocked an impressive 77% win rate, the best across Europe’s top 10 leagues, according to Opta. Be that as it may, Amorim will have to apply fresh perspectives to manage a team like United. The tactics that worked out for Sporting will not be enough.

In Manchester, he’ll reunite with Manuel Ugarte, one of the many young stars he’s molded over in Lisbon. Think of the talent he’s shaped- Matheus Nunes, who’s now with Manchester City, Nuno Mendes, lighting it up at PS, and Joao Palhinha, who made the leap from Fulham to Bayern Munich last summer.

Amorim officially kicks off his United journey on November 11, with his debut game on November 24 against Ipswich Town, a team currently struggling near the bottom of the EPL table. But before Amorim takes the reins, United will face Chelsea at home this Sunday, with interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy calling the shots for one last time.

All in all, Amorim’s hiring by United is a calculated gamble. The club hopes he can revive a squad lacking consistency. His high salary sets high expectations. Fans are eager to see if his success in Portugal can carry over to the Premier League.
