Soccer legend Gerard Pique might have hung his boots, but he is in a relentless pursuit to bring novel developments to the sport. In December 2022, Pique, along with other soccer icons and internet streamers, founded the Kings League in Barcelona. Apart from being a nifty addition to the soccer verse, the seven-a-side league is also giving a business boom for Gerard Pique. Now, the former Barcelona man plans to expand the soccer league by taking it to new territories.
Latin America’s tryst with soccer is one great episode in sporting lore. However, the Americas are still waiting to witness Pique’s much-talked-about Kings League at home. But Gerard Pique now seems to be determined to put that long wait to an end.

Founded in December last year, the Kings League action kick-started on January 1 2023. The inaugural season concluded on March 26. Then, FC Barcelona’s home, Camp Nou, hosted the Kings League’s Final Four matches. The seven-a-side matchups at Camp Nou were box office. More than 92,000 people took to FCB’s home turf to watch the action. The matches at Camp Nou had reportedly generated a revenue of $3 million. As things stand now, this will only be an initial success story for the Kings League. For, a set of new countries, including Shakira’s Colombia will soon host the Kings League.
According to a report on El Tiempo, Gerard Pique will take the Kings League to the Americas. This venture will be known as Kings League Americas and will be headquartered in Mexico. “The Kings League Americas will have presidents or owners from different countries. We want to involve as many countries as possible. There will be countries from Central America, and there will also be a couple from North America that speak Spanish. Then there will be a Colombian, Chilean, Argentinean club,” said Pique.

The FCB legend added that his venture has already confirmed five or six clubs from these Latin American countries. Shakira’s home, Colombia, has historically been having a great bond with soccer. Therefore, a move to Colombia will indeed be a boost for both the league and Pique, the entrepreneur.
More places in the Kings League’s radar
Apart from these Spanish-speaking Latin American nations, Pique has got a couple of other soccer-loving nations on his Kings League radar as well. The four-time UEFA Champions League winner revealed that the Kings League will set its foot on giant soccer markets in Europe, like France and Italy. He said France and Italy are targets for 2024. Other than the Kings League Americas, the former FCB center back is in a move to create a Kings League exclusively for Brazil. And, superstar Neymar Jr. will feature his own club in the league.

Anyhow, the Italian, French, and Brazilian projects won’t be the first to kick-start the seven-a-side action. The honor goes to the Kings League Americas. Hopefully by this time, next year, clubs from Leo Messi’s Argentina and Shakira’s Colombia, among others, will compete in Gerard Pique’s novel project.
