The 2023 year has been quite spectacular for Erling Halaand. Aside from enjoying domestic success with Manchester City by winning the treble, the Norwegian superstar also enjoyed a brilliant season on the individual front. But the spotlight has somehow been stolen from him by none other than Mohamed Salah, as the Liverpool star gets praised for contributing more than the youngster.

Just weeks ago, Haalaand made strides by winning the prestigious Gerd Muller Trophy at the 2023 Ballon d’Or awards for his remarkable season. Yet, the player has been overshadowed by his rival team’s star player.

Over the years, there have been some of the best Premier League players in the world. Among them, the names of Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah are the obvious ones to surface. Interestingly, both were recently compared with each other by former English player, Darren Bent. In a podcast of talkSPORT, British presenter Andy Goldstein asked Bent if he would pick Salah over Haaland, to which the ex-player gave an interesting answer.

Bent said, “He [Salah] always gets more assists than Haaland, and Halaand will score more goals because he’s a beast. But Salah’s goal return will not be that far behind him. I know last season; I mean, it’s a fair few behind him last season, but I think probably Salah would offer you more because of the assists and the goals.”

While claiming Salah possesses both qualities as a striker, he insisted that Haaland does things that the Liverpool star can’t. However, Bent again reckoned by siding with Salah. “There are more things that Salah can do with football. I can’t see Haaland beating three or four guys in a short space and then scoring. But equally two fantastic footballers,” he concluded.

Be that as it may, it is quite an eyebrow-raising claim from the former Championship striker. Certainly, this would ignite quite an intense debate between the fanbases of the two biggest soccer stars. While Salah garnered praise from Bent, he was branded selfish by his former teammate.

Salah branded selfish by a former teammate

After Liverpool’s remarkable trio of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane got split, with Mane and Firmino moving to Saudi Arabia, it led to an interesting revelation. Firmino stirred Salah’s unwillingness to participate in passing gameplay, leading to numerous blown opportunities in the attacking third. He said, “Mohamed Salah was selfish and caused friction among the teammates when he often refused to pass the ball.”

Notably, out of Salah’s 88 assists in 321 games, the winger assisted Firmino just 11 times. In fact, the Egyptian star had also assisted Mane just 18 times as well. Although Mane himself had also assisted Salah 18 times, this led to another revelation by Firmino that the two had a beef with each other. Nevertheless, what do you think about this?
