Yet another year of Ballon d’Or ends in a controversial manner. The 68th edition of the prestigious award saw Manchester City star Rodri win his first Golden Ball over heavily touted Vinicius Jr. Already, it’s a sad day for the Brazilian forward and his ardent supporters to not see him win the award, MLS side Charlotte FC decided to sprinkle some more salt on the wound by taking a cheeky dig at Vini Jr’s snub. That only took a turn for worse as Real Madrid supporters have come to slam the American side.

It all started with an important and breaking headline report from transfer guru Fabrizio Romano just hours before the Ballon d’Or ceremony took place at Thétre du Chtelet. The renowned journalist took to X and wrote, “🚨 BREAKING: Vinicius Jr will NOT travel to Paris as Real Madrid know he will NOT win the Ballon d’Or. No one from Real Madrid will attend the ceremony. No Florentino Pérez, no Vini Jr, no Carlo Ancelotti, no Jude Bellingham.”

Well to simply explain Madrid’s absence, they didn’t fly to France as courtesy to showcase their support to Vinicius Junior. However, on the hysterical side, many have been trolling Los Blancos for their act with Charlotte FC becoming the latest team to do so. The MLS took to X, formerly Twitter, and made a Fabrizio Romano-style announcement but while adding their own hilarious twist.

They wrote, “🚨 BREAKING: Sir Minty will NOT travel to Paris as we know he will NOT win the Ballon d’Or.” The tweet further continued, “No one from Charlotte FC will attend the ceremony. No Tom Bogert, no Andrew Wiebe, no admin, no one.”

Sir Minty is the official mascot of Charlotte FC—an anthropomorphic soccer ball adorned with a crown, cape, and a large silver chain featuring an “M” medallion. Meanwhile, Tom Bogert and Andrew Wiebe are renowned MLS-based journalists which made the joke much hysterical. However, this only seems to have backfired on Charlotte.

Looks like Real Madrid supporters were having such a bad time that they decided to pick a bone with Charlotte FC and its admin. Angry netizens slammed the Major League Soccer-based club for their actions on Instagram.

Ideally, Real Madrid’s absence from Monday night’s Ballon d’Or ceremony is itself a historic thing. Just like Spain’s national team boss Luis de la Fuente said, “It is not good for football that a club like Real Madrid is not present at a gala of this nature.” So Charlotte FC making this light joke is actually a disrespect to Los Blancos:

“Don’t disrespect my club.”

Technically, Charlotte isn’t alone in the trolling; Real Madrid’s arch-rival Seville also made the exact same comment stating, “🚨 BREAKING: Admin will NOT travel to Paris as Admin has been told they will NOT win the Ballon d’Or.” However, Madrid fans wouldn’t like to hear it from a club outside the European stage and took a dig at their identity in the soccer world:

“Is this a real club or? Never heard of them.”

Okay, we smell a bit of irony here, cause despite knowing Seville did it, Madrid fans went more hard on Charlotte FC fans. Then again, it comes to the status of the club, with this netizen reminding the MLS side about their own wounds, who endured a 0-2 defeat to Orlando City just yesterday:

“This is only funny if it comes from a big club. Chill Charlotte yall just got spanked yesterday 😂”

There’s a reason why Real Madrid is called the true heritage in the soccer world. 71 trophies which include a record 15 UEFA Champions League titles, this fan wasn’t afraid to call out Charlotte to show their own trophy cabinet.
