Dramatic—that’s all we have to say about last night’s Turkish Super Lig clash between Trabzonspor and Fenerbahce. It wasn’t just about the atmosphere or the thrill of a five-goal spectacle; fans witnessed some unprecedented moments, including Jose Mourinho doing a knee-slide celebration after his team secured the win. However, the Portuguese tactician remains discontented over poor officiating, calling out the ‘funny situations’ that transpired due to the referee’s decisions.
This isn’t the first time we are discussing Mourinho’s love-hate relationship with referees. Since his tenure began at Fenerbahce, the 61-year-old has made headlines over his discord with the officials. Similar was the case in yesterday’s clash, which he decided to share among his 5.5M Instagram followers with the caption, “Watch and smile. If you like it watch the game because the funny situations don’t stop with this clip.”
In a minute-long clip shared by Mourinho, the incident occurs around the 81st minute, with both sides level at 2-2. Interestingly, Fenerbahce takes a corner, which Çağlar Söyüncü heads just over the bar. However, what happened was that Trabzonspor’s striker, Simon Banza, apparently raised his hand to deflect the ball and prevent it from going into the net. While all the Sarı Lacivertliler players clearly saw this ‘Diego Maradona-inspired god-of-hand’ display, they appealed to the referee for a VAR intervention.

Sadly, that was of no use, as even the video assistant denied any such handball. This decision infuriated the Fenerbahce players, especially Mourinho and his coaching staff, who were visibly angry with the fourth official. Meanwhile, the referee issued a yellow card to Mourinho and signaled to deny the handball incident.
Although Fenerbahce had taken the lead just before halftime through a goal from Fred, Simon Banza equalized with a penalty at the hour mark and added another spot-kick minutes later to put Trabzonspor ahead. However, in the 75th minute, Edin Dzeko scored an equalizer just before this controversial incident. Luckily for Fenerbahce, the referee added 12 minutes of stoppage time, during which Sofyan Amrabat scored the winner.

After the goal, Mourinho celebrated with an unexpected knee slide on the pitch, only to hilariously tumble. Yet, despite the mishap, there were happy tears all around with the hard-fought victory. The night was certainly an emotional rollercoaster for The Special One. However, if you think this caption captures his frustration with the referee, just wait until you hear his post-match comments!

Before also taking such a rant on Instagram, Jose Mourinho left no mercy on the official, slamming his poor decisions. “The man of the match was Atilla Karaoglan. The invisible man. The referee on the field is just a child. We don’t want to see him in our matches again. We don’t want him as a VAR either,” he began.

“Before I came here, I was told a lot of things and I didn’t believe it. It was even worse,” continued Mourinho, explaining that his side’s joyous celebration was because they had triumphed over “very, very powerful people,” vowing they would not give up. He also expressed frustration with the Fenerbahce managers who brought him to the club, saying they had only told him “half of this” beforehand.
“If they told me the whole thing, I would not come to Fenerbahce,” concluded the iconic Real Madrid and Inter Milan boss in his last night’s officiating rant. While Jose’s frustration looks genuine despite the win, we would like to know your thoughts on the incident.
