Can the USMNT overcome their injury woes and break Mexico's dominance in this heated rivalry?

The USMNT packed its bags to successfully land in Zapopan as they gear up to face Mexico in their second test of this month. It was just days ago we witnessed Mauricio Pochettino lead the American boys for the very first time. Now, it’s time for a game away at the Akron Stadium on Wednesday, October 16.

Christian Pulisic and Co. had a remarkable start under their new manager, having secured an emphatic 2-0 victory over the Central American nation at a packed Q2 Stadium. Second-half goals from Yunus Musah and Ricardo Pepi saw Pochettino secure his first-ever win in his debut game. This was a perfect bouncing back from the Stars and Stripes from a rather disappointing September window against Canada and New Zealand.

Meanwhile, Mexico enters the clash with some domestic action, having played a friendly 2-2 draw against La Liga side Valencia on Saturday. Also having exited the group stages of the Copa America in the summer, Javier Aguirre’s side returned for September friendlies, having secured a 3-0 victory over New Zealand but playing a stalemate against Canada.

Mexico vs USMNT: Team news

Injuries

USMNT

Looks like the work pressure has really caught Christian Pulisic off guard. As per the reports from CBS Sports Golazo, the AC Milan forward has left the US Men’s National Team camp quite early overload management. In fact, he isn’t alone in leaving as Weston McKennie, Ricardo Pepi, Marlon Fossey, and Zack Steffen have also exited the camp due to minor injuries.

Have an interesting take?

Only Pepi got a chance to savor the taste of playing under Poch, having even netted a crucial goal. Meanwhile, the likes of McKennie, Fossey, and Steffen have left without playing a single minute. Perhaps, this is a perfect chance for other stars to make their way into the team.

Mexico

Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez is a key absence for Mexico as he nurses his thigh injury. The rest of the players are expected to gain minutes under Javier Aguirre, who will keep most of his team unchanged against Mauricio Pochettino and Co.

Predicted lineups

Mexico [4-2-3-1]: Malagon; Montes, J Sanchez, Vasquez, Angulo; Romo, Lira; Alvarado, Pineda, Huerta; Jimenez

USMNT [4-3-3]: Turner; Scally, McKenzie, Ream, Robinson; Musah, Busio, Morris; Aaronson, Sargent, Wright

Won by Mexico: 38

Draw: 16

The last time both sides faced each other was back in March for a CONCACAF Nations League match. Interestingly, the USA had secured an easy 2-0 win. Similar would be expectations from a bold and fresh Mauricio Pochettino’s side in the upcoming clash and they would rightly do so but with their own challenges. We reckon the score will be USMNT 1-0 Mexico.
