The soccer world is still not over the transfer of Lionel Messi to Inter Miami. The Argentinian finally announced his decision to play in the MLS. It was the least expected move, as others expected him to choose the mouth-watering deal from Saudi Arabia. Moreover, a fairytale return to FC Barcelona was also on the cards.

However, it seems he was already thorough in his decision. Nonetheless, supporters in the US are waiting desperately to see him in action. While everyone has been in praise of his transfer decision, MLS’s neighboring league’s president also had some words to quote about his arrival in North America.

Recently, the president of the Mexican soccer league, Mikel Arriola, discussed the impact of Messi on North American soccer. While speaking to Mundo Deportivo, the Liga MX boss insisted that the 35-year-old’s arrival would give a major boost to the budding Leagues cup of the continent.

“It is the leap in quality, more than economically, in sports. Messi comes from winning the World Cup . It will be a watershed because it will put the Leagues Cup on everyone’s lips and we will be part of that level one month a year,” he says. While his debut is still unknown, the Argentine may play his first game in the Leagues Cup against Cruz Azul of Mexican soccer on July 21.

The Leagues Cup is an annual competition that takes place between the clubs from MLS and Liga MX. Arriola boasted about how Messi’s arrival will help the world see how much they still need to improve. “If you add these two leagues, you can already compare them with some European and South American leagues. The Leagues Cup will be the growth mechanism for our near future,” he added.

According to MLS regulations, Messi will be eligible to make his debut after July 5. It is likely that the World Cup winner won’t make his debut until Inter Miami’s 23rd game. With the new playoff system in effect, it is crucial for Messi to adapt quickly and make an impact at the club. He must give his team a slim chance of qualifying for the playoffs.
