It was a mixed sort of night for Erling Haaland. He managed to get on the scoresheet and scored the 3rd for the Sky Blues. However, he will likely be haunted by an uncharacteristic miss. The commentator on air remarked, “Oh My Goodness“, in response to the miss, and fans on social media are not letting the Norwegian machine off easily.

A fan on X posted the Erling Haaland miss with the caption, “Messi Really Saved football by winning ballon d’Or over Erling Haaland… Look at this.” He followed it up with 3 crying emojis to highlight his disbelief at what happened. However, another supporter saw the funny side of the Messi comparison and added, “Missing chances doesn’t mean Messi should rob the Balon d’Or.”

It was in the 44th minute that the chaos was ensured. Manchester City, at that point, were tailing their city rivals. A good passage of play from the Sky Blues led to Phil Foden giving a looping header to the Norwegian ace. However, the striker miscued, and the shot went high and over without even troubling the goalkeeper.

The 23-year-old looked in disbelief. After all, the chance was such that it was harder to miss than score. The XG of Haaland’s effort stood at 0.88! Fortunately, the chance creator, Phil Foden, had other plans. The Englishman turned the match around with a brace, his second being a goal of real beauty. Haaland also joined the party with a late goal.

Chelsea managed to draw against Manchester City at the Etihad last month. Not without help from Erling Haaland himself. Just like today, the Norwegian was criticized and trolled heavily for his performance that day, having missed nine big goal attempts! However, Pep Guardiola was assured that this was just a rare blip. The manager said, “I’m not a proper man to give advice to strikers. We created the chances and next time he’s going to score. I don’t blame him. Next day he’ll score.”

And just like always, the Spaniard was proven right. In the next game against Brentford, Erling Haaland scored the only goal of the game and single-handedly won them 3 points. 2 games later, against Luton, Haaland scored 5! Hence, it proves world-class players will miss chances and have bad games. But, it’s how they respond to the situation that matters.
