When we hear pay inequality in soccer, US Soccer is the first name that comes to mind. It’s because of the long legal battle fought between the US Soccer and the USWNT players over pay equity. The players finally reached an agreement with the soccer federation last year over pay equity. USWNT stars, especially Megan Rapinoe, played a crucial role in the fight against pay inequality.

Recently, Rapinoe came forward and asked US Soccer to pay women’s team coach Vlatko Andonovski more amidst reports revealing his salary for 2022. She wasn’t happy with the difference between the salary received by Andonovski and USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter for the year 2022.
Megan Rapinoe unhappy with a pay disparity between USMNT and USWNT coaches
US Soccer appointed Andonovski as a USWNT coach in 2019. He has won silverware with the team regularly. USWNT has won SheBelieves Cup four consecutive times since 2020 under the coach. The women also won the 2020 Olympics Bronze medal and CONCACAF Women’s Championship in 2022 under Andonovski.
Despite winning more silverware than his counterpart at USMNT, the salary he received for 2022 is way below that of Berhalter. He received $446,495 in pay for the last year, which includes a bonus of $50,000. It was 73% less than that Gregg Berhalter received in 2022.

Berhalter’s salary for 2022 was $1.6 million, including $300,000. He was the highest-paid employee of the US Soccer federation last year. On the other hand, Andonovski was seventh on the list. Megan Rapinoe didn’t seem pleased with the pay disparity and took to Instagram to share the reports and back Vlatko Andonovski.
Rapinoe wrote, “Pay Him,” on her Instagram story linking the report of the USWNT coach salary comparison to that of Berhalter. “Also, damn Vlatko ok, now we definitely getting you a pair of Gucci loafers,” she added further. Rapinoe has been advocating pay equity in soccer for a long and also recently supported the Canada women’s team over the issue.

Before the SheBelieves Cup started, Canadian women were on strike against Canada Soccer. The main reason for the strike was the issue of pay inequality. Also, Canadian women were not happy with the federation for cutting the funds of the team ahead of the World Cup this year.
Megan Rapinoe and other USWNT stars voiced their support for Canada Soccer. She asked the federation to resolve the matter soon. The Canadian team participated in the SheBelieves Cup after the emergency meeting with the association. However, the issue is still pending, and the fans will hope for a quick solution with the World Cup in less than five months.
